Mikumi National Park hero - 2400x1500
The most accessible of Tanzania's southern parks — open floodplains, easy game viewing, and a taste of the wild south within reach of Dar es Salaam.
01 The place
Mikumi National Park is the most accessible of Tanzania's southern parks, and for many travellers their easiest introduction to the wilder south. Covering 3,230 square kilometres north of the Udzungwa Mountains, it is crossed by the surfaced highway between Dar es Salaam and the interior, which means it can be reached by road in a few hours from the coast — a rarity among the southern and western parks, most of which require flights. That accessibility, combined with genuinely good wildlife, makes Mikumi a rewarding short safari.
The heart of the park is the Mkata Floodplain, an open expanse of grassland often compared to the Serengeti in miniature, where much of the wildlife concentrates and game viewing is easy and rewarding. Framed by the Rubeho and Uluguru mountains, and bordering the vast Nyerere National Park to the south, Mikumi forms part of one of the largest connected wildlife ecosystems in Africa. It is an excellent choice for a first safari, a short trip, or a stop en route to Ruaha and the deeper south.
02 The wildlife
The open Mkata Floodplain makes Mikumi's wildlife easy to see. Lion are frequently encountered, often lounging on the grassland or, occasionally, up in trees — a behaviour shared with Lake Manyara in the north. The floodplain holds large herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, impala and eland, and Mikumi is a good place to see the majestic greater kudu and the sable antelope in the miombo woodland at the park's edges.
Elephant move through the park in good numbers, and the hippo pools near the entrance are a reliable highlight, crowded with hippo and drawing waterbirds and crocodile. Giraffe are common and relaxed on the plains, and the park's predators include leopard, spotted hyena and jackal. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, from lilac-breasted rollers and bateleur eagles to the colourful yellow-throated longclaw. While Mikumi cannot match the density of the great northern parks, its accessibility and open terrain make for consistently good, easy wildlife viewing.
03 When to go
Mikumi can be visited year-round, and its road access makes it viable even for short trips in any season. The dry season, June to October, is the best time for game viewing, as wildlife concentrates around the remaining water on the Mkata Floodplain and the grass is low and easy to see through.
The wet season, November to May, turns the park lush and green, with newborn animals and excellent birding as migratory species arrive, though some tracks become muddy and wildlife disperses more widely. The scenery is at its most beautiful in the green months. For the easiest, most concentrated wildlife viewing on the floodplain, the dry season is the best choice, but Mikumi's accessibility means it rewards a visit at any time of year.

04 The regions
Mikumi's landscapes are anchored by the Mkata Floodplain in the north, the park's open grassland heart, where the lion, buffalo, zebra and giraffe concentrate and most game drives focus. The hippo pools near the main entrance are a reliable stop, crowded with hippo and birdlife. To the south and around the edges, miombo woodland holds sable, kudu and the park's quieter, more elusive species. The surrounding Rubeho and Uluguru mountains frame the park and, together with the bordering Nyerere National Park, place Mikumi within one of Africa's largest connected wilderness areas.

05 Getting there
Mikumi is the most accessible of Tanzania's southern parks, lying about 280 kilometres west of Dar es Salaam — a four-to-five-hour drive on surfaced road, with the main highway actually crossing the park. This makes it uniquely reachable by road among the southern and western parks, and a popular choice for travellers short on time or wanting to avoid a flight. Mikumi also has an airstrip for those flying between the southern parks. Its position on the route inland makes it a natural stop en route to Ruaha, or a rewarding standalone short safari from the coast.
07 The route
Drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive on the Mkata Floodplain and a stop at the hippo pools.
A full day exploring the floodplain and miombo woodland — lion, buffalo, giraffe and elephant on the open grassland, and kudu and sable at the park's edges.
A final morning game drive before continuing west toward Ruaha, or returning to the coast.
Continue to Ruaha for the deeper south, or return to Dar es Salaam.
